BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team ran its winning streak to five matches with a 5-2 Southland Conference victory over visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday.
Diana Mendez improved to 15-0 in singles competition for Lamar (14-2 overall, 6-1 SLC) with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sandra Burges at No. 5 singles.
Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Kaltrina Harbuzi each boosted their singles marks to 15-1 on the season. Gutierrez was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Mirna Cicak at No. 1 singles, while Harbuzi posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Doris Kuselj at No. 2 singles.
"I knew it would be a tough match," Lamar coach David Wong said. "It was a hard-fought match that lasted for 4 1/2 hours. I have a lot orf respect for their coach (Steve Moore) and his staff."
Natalia Mayagoitia and Alessandra Pennesi also registered wins at singles for Lamar.
Bianca Discordia picked up the only singles win for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-3, 5-2).
Lamar returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it travels to Southeastern Louisiana for a Southland Conference match.
