BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team was not about to be thwarted by the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday.
The Lady Cardinals rolled to a 7-0 win over the visiting Roadrunners in a Southland Conference match at the Thompson Family Tennis Center to improve to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
"We played a very solid match today," Lamar coach David Wong said. "We were strong throughout the lineup."
Lamar's first and second singles players both improved to 14-1 in singles competition. Mariaryeni Gutierrez was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Stefanie Peana at No. 1 singles, while Kaltrina Harbuzi posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Micaela Silva at No. 2 singles.
Diana Mendez improved her singles record to 14-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Katie Ottenbreit at No. 5 singles.
Alicia Porte, Natalia Mayagoitia and Alessandra Pennesi also won at singles for Lamar.
UTSA fell to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Lamar returns to action at 10 a.m. Sunday (April 3) when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders were 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the SLC heading into their match at McNeese State on Saturday.
"Sunday will be a good match," Wong said. "We just have to continue to play the way we have been."
There is no admission charge for Sunday's match. However, all fans are encouraged to bring canned food items that will be donated to the Southeast Texas Food Bank. All fans bringing canned foods will be eligible for door prizes.
