THIBODAUX, La. - The Lamar University women's tennis team wasn't going to let dropping the doubles point affect the Lady Cardinals' performance in singles play.
Lamar swept the singles competition without losing a set in a 6-1 Southland conference victory over host Nicholls on Sunday as the Lady Cardinals ran their winning streak to seven matches.
"We came back strong after losing in doubles," Lamar coach David Wong said. "We were really focused."
Lamar's Mariaryeni Gutierrez boosted her singles mark to 17-1 at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Natalia Zamora. Kaltrina Harbuzi moved to 17-1 at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Florina Nosca.
Alicia Porte, Natalia Mayagoitia, Diana Mendez and Alessandra Pennesi also won at singles for Lamar. Gutierrez and Harbuzi teamed up for an 8-3 win over Nosca and Marina Ljoshevska to improve to 16-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Nicholls fell to 9-9 overall and 3-5 in the Southland Conference.
Lamar (16-2 overall, 8-1 SLC) returns home to host Northwestern State at 11 a.m. Saturday in a battle for second place in the conference.
"We had two good wins this weekend, but now we have to get ready for Northwestern State," Wong said. "It should be a good match."
