BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team posted an impressive 7-0 win over visiting Stephen F. Austin in a Southland Conference match Sunday afternoon.
Lamar (8-0 overall, 2-0 SLC) handed the Ladyjacks (9-1, 1-1), who entered the match ranked 71st in the nation, their first loss of the season.
"This was a tremendous win for us," Lamar coach David Wong said. "To beat a team the caliber of Stephen F. Austin is impressive. Everybody was mentally sharp and focused."
Lamar's Alicia Porte had the biggest win for Lamar, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Andreea Enica, who was ranked 106th in the nation.
The Lady Cardinals had three players remain unbeaten in singles competition for the season: Mariaryeni Gutierrez at No. 1 singles, Kaltrina Harbuzi at No. 2 singles and Diana Mendez at No. 6 singles. In addition, the tandem of Gutierrez and Harbuzi remained unbeaten at No. 1 doubles.
Lamar is at TCU for a non-conference match at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
