BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team opened its Southland Conference schedule with a 6-1 win over visiting Sam Houston State at the Thompson Family Tennis Center on Saturday.
After dropping the doubles point, the Lady Cardinals (7-0 overall, 1-0 SLC) swept all six singles matches.
Lamar's Mariaryeni Gutierrez improved to 7-0 at first singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Imke Jagau. Kaltrina Harbuzi moved to 7-0 at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Tatyana Postnikova.
Gutierrez and Harbuzi boosted their No. 1 doubles mark to 7-0 with an 8-2 win over Postnikova and Nadia Dubyanskaya.
Alicia Porte, Natalia Mayagoitia, Alessandra Pennesi and Diana Mendez also won at singles for Lamar.
Sam Houston State dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
"It was a tough match, made tougher by the fact that we had a long rain delay," Lamar coach David Wong said. "But we stayed focused."
Lamar hosts Stephen F. Austin at noon Sunday in a Southland Conference match. Admission is free.
