LAFAYETTE, La. - Diana Mendez remained unbeaten in singles competition to lead the Lamar University women's tennis team to a 6-1 non-conference victory at Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.
Mendez improved to 13-0 on the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sandra Alhqvist at No. 5 singles as the Lady Cardinals (12-2) extended their winning streak to three matches. Mariaryeni Gutierrez moved to 13-1 at No. 1 singles, while Kaltrina Harbuzi boosted her record to 13-1 at No. 2 singles. Gutierrez and Harbuzi won at No. 1 doubles to improve to 12-2 on the season.
"All of the girls played mentally tough," Lamar coach David Wong said. "We keep getting better and we're moving forward."
Louisiana-Lafayette fell to 9-6 on the season.
"I have a lot of respect for their program and their coach," Wong said. "This was a quality win for us."
Lamar returns to Southland Conference play when it hosts UTSA at 10 a.m. Saturday.
