BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team looked sharp in posting a 5-2 non-conference win over visiting Cleveland State at the Thompson Family Tennis Center on Friday.
The Lady Cardinals (10-2) saw Diana Mendez run her record to 11-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Maria Lazaris at No. 5 singles. Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Kaltrina Harbuzi each improved to 11-1 in singles play for Lamar with straight-set victories. Alessandra Penessi also won in singles play for the Lady Cards, who swept the doubles competition.
"Both of us really fought hard," Lady Cardinals coach David Wong said. "Both teams are disciplined. We were a little more mentally tough today."
Cleveland State dropped to 4-10.
Lamar returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday with a Southland Conference match at McNeese State.
