HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Lamar tandem of Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Kaltrina Harbuzi remained unbeaten at first doubles as well as No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, as they led the LU women's tennis team to a 4-3 win over host Southern Mississippi in a non-conference match Sunday.
Gutierrez and Harbuzi combined for an 8-2 win over Stephanie Dellocono and Vroni van Berlo to improve to 6-0 on the season. Gutierrez posted a 6-2, 6-1 decision over van Berlo to move to 6-0 at first singles. Gutierrez has won 27 consecutive singles matches dating back to last season.
Harbuzi was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Asa Bengtson to boost her record at second singles to 6-0.
Diana Mendez won at fifth singles for the Lady Cardinals (6-0). Lamar secured the doubles point as Mendez teamed with Natalia Mayagoitia for an 8-0 win over Zoe Lee and Shannon Rogers at No. 3 doubles.
Southern Mississippi fell to 3-6.
"This was a good weekend for us," Lamar coach David Wong said. "We got a good win over South Alabama on Saturday and came back to beat a tough Southern Mississippi team. They were playing with a full lineup for the first time in a while, and they have some strong players."
Lamar opens its Southland Conference season when it hosts Sam Houston State at 11 a.m. Saturday.
