HUNTSVILLE, Texas - - Jenna Plumley poured in a career-high 35 points to power the Lamar University women's basketball team to a 99-88 victory over host Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference game Saturday afternoon.
Plumley eclipsed her previous standard of 30 set in a 79-73 win over UT Arlington on Feb. 24, 2010, at the Montagne Center. Plumley, who also had nine assists,scored the most points by a Lady Cardinal in a game this seson. Kalis Loyde had 34 points in an 86-83 win over Cal Poly on Dec. 4. Plumley went 15-of-16 from the foul line to tie a Lamar record for successful free throws. Lisa McMahon had 15 against LSU on Jan. 30, 1995.
Loyd added 22 points, Trashanna Smith had a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Monique Whittaker added 15 points as the Lady Cardinals netted their highest point total of the season as Lamar ran its winning streak to seven games. Smith had three blocked shots to give her 202 for her career, as she became the first Lady Cardinal to register 200 blocks.
With the win, Lamar (23-5 overall, 12-2 SLC) remained one game behind McNeese State for the overall conference lead with two games remaining. The Lady Cardinals are at Texas State at 7 p.m. Wednesday before closing out the regular season at McNeese State at 1 p.m. March 5.
"We played great as a team," Plumley said. "This is a hard place to play in because the fans are loud. But it's fun. We came out and had a great effort."
Sequeena Thomas had a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds for Sam Houston State (15-13, 9-5). Chanice Smith had 29 points for the Bearkats, Clarke Davis had 15 points and Britni Martin finished with 12 points.
