BEAUMONT, Texas - Helene Czudek rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Menna Kamal in the final match of the day to five the Lamar University women's tennis team a 4-3 win over visiting Arkansas State in a non-conference match Sunday.
Czudek, playing at No. 6 singles, improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Lady Cardinals boosted their record to 4-0 on the young campaign.
"It was a hard-fought match," Lamar coach David Wong said. "Helene did a great job of battling back to secure the win."
Lamar's Mariaryeni Gutierrez, the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year, improved to 4-0 at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Emily Crowe. Kaltrina Harbuzi moved to 4-0 at second singles with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Jenny Herring.
Gutierrez and Harbuzi combined to move to 4-0 at No. 1 singles with an 8-5 win over Crowe and Ioana Teu.
Diana Mendez picked up Lamar's other win in singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Teu at No. 5 singles as she also improved to 4-0.
Lamar is at South Alabama for a non-conference match at 2 p.m. Saturday.
