BEAUMONT, Texas - Led by reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year Mariaryeni Gutierrez, the Lamar University women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 5-2 victory over defending National Junior College Athletic Association champion Tyler Junior College on Saturday.
Gutierrez cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Sun Wen and teamed with Kaltrina Harbuzi for a 9-8 (0) triumph over Wen and Antonia Kolovaou at first doubles. The win comes one day after Lamar opened the season with a 6-1 victory over UTEP.
"Mariaryeni is playing very well right now," Lamar coach David Wong said. "But I'm happy with the way everybody is performing right now. Tyler Junior College has a very strong program. This is a good win for us early in the season."
Harbuzi Alessandra Pennesi and Diana Mendez also registered wins at singles for Lamar. Brooke Dennis and Audrey Leitz had wins at singles for Tyler Junior College (1-1).
Lamar is idle until hosting Arkansas State in a non-conference match at 10 a.m. Feb. 20. The Lamar men's tennis team hosts Abilene Christian University at noon Sunday.
