BEAUMONT – Lamar student-athletes found success on the playing field and in the classroom during the fall 2010 semester as 66 Cardinals were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Fall Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Wednesday.
The fall honor roll includes student-athletes who took part in men’s and women’s cross country, football, volleyball and women’s soccer. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 grade point average.
Lamar’s total of 66 was tied for the fourth most among the 12 member institutions, while the 13 LU student-athletes who posted a perfect 4.0 grade point average ranked second among all SLC schools.
“To be honored academically is certainly what we’re trying to do here,” said LU athletics director Larry Tidwell. “We know the importance of academics and we’re especially proud that the overall GPA for our student-athletes was a 3.0, and that includes all 17 sports.
“A lot of credit falls to Helene (Thill), Rose (Hubbard), Rob (McDermand), Tommy (Collins) and our tutors for an outstanding effort in achieving this high plateau of academic excellence.”
Lamar had a solid fall semester athletically as the men’s cross country team won its fifth straight SLC Championship. The volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the SLC Tournament, the soccer team made the SLC Tournament for the first time ever and the newly resurrected football program finished with a 5-6 record.
Among the Lamar student-athletes with a perfect grade point average was Sam Walkow who earned all-conference honors in cross country in 2009. Matt Johnsen, the 2010 cross country freshman of the year after a third-place finish at the conference meet, posted a 3.80 GPA.
