CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 Southland Conference victory over host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
Lamar (10-8 overall, 5-3 conference) dropped the doubles point, but came back to sweep the singles competition, rallying for three-set wins in three matches as the competition lasted 6 hours, 30 minutes.
"We dropped a tough doubles point, but we bounced back in the singles matches," Lamar coach David Wong said. "I'm very proud of the players. We beat a very good, well-coached team."
Lamar's Mariaryeni Gutierrez improved to 17-0 on the season with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Mirna Cicak at No. 1 singles. Lamar's Kaltrina Harbuzi boosted her season mark to 14-1 after a 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 victory over Doris Kuselj at No. 2 singles.
The Islanders fell to 9-10 overall, 4-6 in conference play.
Lamar is at Sam Houston State for a conference match at 1 p.m. Saturday.
