NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Mariaryeni Gutierrez improved her singles record to 19-0 to power the Lamar University women's tennis team to a 5-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin in a Southland Conference match Sunday. It was Stephen F. Austin's first home loss of the season.
Gutierrez defeated Roxana Enica 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. She also helped Lamar earn the doubles point as he combined with Manijee Ashrafi for a 9-7 win over Enica and Alina Shazko at No. 1 doubles.
Kaltrina Harbuzi improved to 17-1 in singles competition by defeating Shazko 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Natalia Mayagoitia and Diana Mendez also won at singles for Lamar (12-8 overall, 7-3 SLC).
"IT was a good weekend with two good wins for us," Lamar coach David Wong said. "We're playing very well right now."
Stephen F. Austin fell to 9-9 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
Lamar returns home to host Southland Conference foe Southeastern Louisiana in the regular-season finale at 10 a.m. Saturday.
