SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Lamar University baseball team failed to overcome a rocky start in a 12-1 loss to host Texas State in a Southland Conference game Saturday.
Texas State scored all of its runs in the first three innings as Lamar fell to 15-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Aaron Buchanan and Quentin Luquette had two hits apiece for Lamar. Luquette's seventh-inning hit drove in Buchanan for Lamar's only run. The game was halted after the top of the seventh as a result of the conference's mercy rule.
Lamar starter Jonathan Dziedzic (1-1) took the loss, allowing nine hits and eight runs, five earned, in two innings. Taylor McInnis pitched three innings of one-hit, shutout relief for Lamar.
Texas State starter Michael Russo (3-0) allowed eight hits and one run over seven innings. Kyle Kubitza had three hits and five RBIs to lead the offense for Texas State (13-8, 6-2).
The series concludes with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday in San Marcos.
