Lady Cards edged by Texas State

BEAUMONT, Texas - Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Kaltrina Harbuzi continued their strong play at singles for the Lamar University women's tennis team, but the Lady Cardinals dropped a 4-3 Southland Conference decision to visiting Texas State on Saturday.

Gutierrez improved to 14-0 by rallying for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Andrea Giraldo at first singles, while Harbuzi boosted her record to 12-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Melissa Hadad at No. 2 singles.

Manijee Ashrafi won at fourth singles for Lamar (8-7 overall, 3-2 conference).

Texas State (9-4, 5-1) also won three singles matches, but earned the crucial doubles point by winning at first and third doubles.

Lamar returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when it hosts UT Arlington in a Southland Conference match.
