ARLINGTON, Texas - Three Lamar players scored 14 points but UT Arlington outscored the Cardinals 20-2 in the middle of the game to claim a 75-71 win at Texas Hall on Wednesday night.
With Lamar holding a 34-21 lead and just over four minutes left in the first half, UTA closed the half on a 7-0 run and opened the second period with a 13-2 stretch over six minutes totaling a 20-2 scoring outburst.
The stretch in the second period was keyed by Marquez Haynes, who had a free throw and a pair of dunks to start the half. After the nation's third-leading scorer was held to just one free throw in the first half, he finished with a game-high 21 to go along with six assists.
The Mavs led by as many as 14 after a baseline jumper by Tommy Moffitt with 7:44 remaining gave them a 63-49 lead. But the Cardinals fought back and got to with six at 64-58 on an Anthony Miles layup with 4:46 on the clock.
UTA responded with four Haynes free throws to get the lead back to double digits.
Lamar didn't get the margin to under six until a Coy Custer layup with 10.1 left made it 74-69 A Custer tip-in at the buzzer followed a Maverick free throw to end the game.
Lamar (14-15, 5-8 Southland) dropped its fourth-consecutive game but remained in a tie for eighth place in the league standings with Northwestern State and Nicholls.
Justin Nabors finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds to record his 14th double-double of the year. Coy Custer continued his recent stretch of strong play with his first career double-double - tallying 14 points and 11 boards. Anthony Miles totaled 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
The Cardinals shot 36 percent and made just 20-of-33 free throws.
UTA (16-10, 8-5) shot 49 percent and outscored Lamar 17-10 in points off turnovers, which negated the Cardinals' 27-0 margin in second chance points. Lamar outrebounded UTA 48-31 and 23-5 on the offensive glass.
All 12 teams in the league have three games remaining. Lamar opens a two-game homestand on Saturday against UTSA. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. and tickets can be purchased for $1.
