BEAUMONT, Texas - Manijee Ashrafi's 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles powered the Lamar University women's tennis team to a 7-0 victory over visiting Nicholls in a Southland Conference match Saturday.
Mariaryeni Gutierrez won in straight sets at first singles and teamed with Ashrafi for a victory at first doubles for Lamar (3-1 overall, 1-0 conference).
Manami Kuroda at fifth singles and Alessandra Pennesi both needed three sets to win in singles for Lamar.
Nicholls, which opened its season with a 9-0 win over Xavier (La.), fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
"That was a tough match and a good win for us today," Lamar coach David Wong said. "Nicholls is a much-improved team. They're well coached, and they are going to be a tough opponent for other teams in our conference."
Lamar returns to action at 10 a.m. Sunday to host Prairie View A&M before welcoming Southern Mississippi at noon Monday.
