SAN ANTONIO -- Anthony Miles scored 19 points and Justin Nabors collected his tenth double-double as Lamar snapped an 11-game road losing streak with a 64-57 win over UTSA at the Convocation Center Saturday night.
Lamar (11-11, 3-4 Southland) led by as many as eight in the second half and for the final 16 minutes but had to hold off a strong UTSA rally. The Cards made four of five free throws and had an offensive putback on the lone miss in the final 37 seconds to secure the win.
Miles was 7-of-12 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers and six rebounds to lead the LU offense. Nabors had 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in a season-best 38 minutes. San Antonio native Charlie Harper added 10 points, five boards and five assists.
The Cardinals shot 51 percent overall and were 9-of-12 from the free throw line. They also held a 38-26 rebounding edge.
UTSA (12-7, 2-4) was led by Morris Smith IV's 19 points. Demarco Stepter had nine points and seven rebounds, while Devin Gibson and Melvin Gibson III also had nine. The Roadrunners shot just 37.7 percent from the floor and were held to their third-lowest scoring output of the season - their lowest in six league games.
In the first half, Lamar took its largest lead of the period at 18-11 when Nabors had a dunk, made a jumper and Miles completed the 7-0 run with a trey at the 11:39 mark. UTSA fought back and tied the game at 23 before the Cards outscored the home squad 7-6 over the final 5:51.
Lamar shot 46 percent in the first half but committed 10 turnovers that led to nine UTSA points. LU was dominant on the glass with a 19-11 edge and a 9-0 second chance points lead.
The second half opened with the teams trading buckets over the first 3:09, which resulted in five lead changes before a Coy Custer three from the corner gave Lamar the lead for good at 37-35. That started an 11-2 run that was capped off by another Nabors dunk in traffic which resulted in a 45-37 lead, its largest of the game.
Lamar's last road win came at Sam Houston State on Feb. 18 of last season. Prior to Saturday's win, the Cardinals were the only league school without a road win this season.
Lamar will return to Beaumont and open a three-game homestand against Central Arkansas on Wednesday night. Tip-off at the Montagne Center is set for 7:05 p.m. The Cardinals are 10-2 at home this year.
