Texas State used a 7-0 run in overtime to upset Lamar, 97-92, at the Montagne Center Saturday night.
The Bobcats scored five points off four Cardinal turnovers in the extra session as they outscored Lamar 12-7 in the deciding frame.
Lamar moves to 10-10 overall and 2-3 in Southland Conference action, while Texas State improves to 9-10 and 3-2.
The loss spoiled a pair of strong performances from the frontcourt duo of Justin Nabors and Lawrence Nwevo. Nabors finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 6.6 seconds left in regulation. It was his conference-leading ninth double-double of the year. Nwevo, meanwhile, recorded the first double-double of his career with 15 points and 12 boards. It was a career-high in points and tied the best on the glass for the fifth-year senior.
Lamar shot 52 percent from the floor and made six 3-pointers as four players reached double figures in points - Kendrick Harris had 22 and Anthony Miles had 21. Both players dished out seven assists apiece.
Texas State was led by Cameron Johnson's game-high 24 points and 15 rebounds. He was one of six Bobcats in double figures. TSU shot 42 percent and finished with 11 3-pointers, tying the most by an LU opponent this year.
TSU stormed out to a 17-4 lead in the game's opening five minutes. LU responded with a 13-4 scoring burst to get within four points, at 21-17 with just under 12 minutes to play in the half. The Bobcat lead remained in the mid-to-high single digits for much of the remainder of the period before the Cards took their first lead of the contest at 31-30 on a pair of Nabors free throws with 4:12 on the clock.
The Bobcats closed the period on a 6-4 run to take a 36-35 edge into the locker room.
Lamar used a 13-4 run to take its largest lead of the game at 66-44 with 9:36 on the clock. Then Texas State started getting hot from outside and made five treys in the next 3:30 to climb to within 77-74 with just over five minutes left.
Texas State actually led by three following a Johnson jumper with 1:10 to go, but Nabors answered with the second of his two triples to tie it at 77. Nabors and Johnson each made one of two free throw in the final 18 seconds, with Johnson misfiring with 6.6 tics left that could have ended the game.
Lamar will now hit the road for a pair of games, at Sam Houston State on Wednesday and at UTSA on Saturday. Both games will tip=off at 7 p.m. and will be carried live on KLVI 560-AM.
