Results

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's tennis team continued their strong play Thursday, taking down the UT Pan American Lady Broncs 7-0 at the Cardinal Courts.

With the threat of rain looming, the match was moved from 2 p.m. to 10 a.m. and was started with singles play as opposed to doubles. Lamar dominated in singles play, winning all but one match in straight sets.

Maria Gutierrez and Manijee Ashrafi quickly notched the first two points for Lamar, winning at No. 2 and No. 4 respectively. Gutierrez registered a 6-1, 6-1 win over Megan Bedeau in the two spot, and Ashrafi cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Malin Andersen at No. 3. Salina Aranda gave Lamar a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Sarah Burton, while Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Carla Nava made it 5-0 with simultaneous victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Mariaryeni Gutierrez downed Stephanie Willerding 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 and Nava defeated Andrea Salvetova 6-3, 6-1 at No.3.

In the match at No. 5 Manami Kuroda battled from behind to secure the singles sweep for LU with a win over Reetta Raty. Ratty took the first set 5-7 and was up 4-2 before Kuroda took over the second set for a 6-4 win. In the third set tie breaker Kuroda again battled for the win bouncing back from a 7-6 deficit to win 10-7.

In doubles play the Lady Cardinals secured two of the three matched to win the point and complete the 7-0 victory.

"It was important for us to play and win this match today," head coach David Wong said. "With UTSA coming here on Saturday, we needed to keep our momentum up and have ourselves ready for a very tough Southland Conference opponent. I think we did a good job today. Hopefully we can continue to play well on Saturday."

With the win the Lady Cards improve to 9-5 on the year and 4-0 at home. They will be back in action on Saturday when they host SLC frontrunner UTSA at noon at the Cardinal Courts.
