Results

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Lamar University women's tennis team continued their solid play, taking down Southern Miss 6-1 in the first round of the Lady Eagle Classic.

The Lady Cardinals opened the contest by sweeping the doubles point. Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Maria Gutierrez paired for an 8-6 win over Elja Van Berlo and Lauren Gutterman at No. 1, Manijee Ashrafi and Carla Nava took down Zoe Lee and Alexandra Kaluza 8-6 at No. 2 while Manami Kuroda and Salina Aranda rolled past Shannon Rogers and Sarah Ellis 8-1 at No. 3.

In singles play the Lady Cardinals picked up wins at one and two, along with victories at four through six to claim the 6-1 win. Mariaryeni Gutierrez won the match at No. 1 6-3, 6-2 over Van Berlo, while Maria Gutierrez came from behind to take out Kaluza 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 at No. 2. At No. 3 Manijee Ashrafi cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lee, Kuroda posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over Rogers at No. 5 and Aranda won 6-0, 6-2 against Ellis at No. 6.

Lamar's only setback of the match came at No. 3, where Gutterman took down Nava 6-1, 6-1.

The victory over the Golden Eagles boosts the Lady Cardinals record to 7-4 on the year. They will be back in action again on Saturday at 10 a.m. when they take on Troy.
