BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's tennis team completed their opening weekend of Southland Conference play with a 7-0 win over Stephen F. Austin at the Cardinal Courts Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Cardinals opened the contest by claiming the double point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Manijee Ashrafi and Carla Nava defeated Gabriela Gadeva and Tatiana Smolnikova 8-3 at No. 2 while Manami Kuroda and Salina Aranda also won 8-3 over Andreea Enica and Sanjana Kapur at No. 3.
In singles play the Lady Cardinals claimed all six matches to complete the 7-0 sweep of the Ladyjacks. Mariaryeni Gutierrez claimed the match at No. 1 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 over Roxana Enica, while Maria Gutierrez downed Alina Shazkho 6-4, 4-6 10-4 at No. 2.
The rest of the singles matches were claimed by the Lady Cards in straight sets as Nava beat Kapur 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, Ashrafi downed Gadeva 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4, Kuroda took out Smolnikova 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 and Aranda cruised past Harrison 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
"Winning this match was a great way to close out the opening weekend of conference play," head coach David Wong said. "After a little bit of a rough start to the season, we needed to come out and make a statement about how good we can be. By winning against SFA and Sam Houston on Saturday, I think my team proved that we are going to be very tough to deal with this season."
The win boosts the Lady Cardinals record to 4-2 on the year and 2-0 in Southland Conference play. They will be back in action again on Saturday, March 7 when they travel to Texas State for a 10 a.m. showdown.
