BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend, falling 4-3 to Louisiana Monroe on Saturday in Monroe, La. and taking down Alcorn State 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in Lorman, Miss.
After falling 4-3 to the Warhawks on Saturday, the Lady Cardinals found the win column for the first time this season when they rolled past Alcorn 5-2. Lamar swept the doubles competition and won singles matches at one through four, while dropping matches at five and six.
On Saturday the Lady Cards could not hold off Monroe in doubles play, giving the Warhawks a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. They home team used the double point to their advantage as the two teams split the six matches 3-3.
Lamar picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 as Mariaryeni Gutierrez rolled over Vivian Polak 6-1, 6-2 and Maria Gutierrez downed Lena Satge 6-2, 6-4. The third Cardinals win came from Carla Nava at No. 4 as she outlasted Monica Winkel 1-6, 7-5, 11-9.
After the weekend's 1-1 performance, the Lady Cardinals are now 1-2 on the year.
