HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Lamar played a very impressive second-half of basketball but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals fell at Marshall, 87-74, at the Cam Henderson Center Wednesday.
Lamar (2-4) shot 47 percent after the intermission and scored a season-high 49 points in the second period. The Cardinals outrebounded the Thundering Herd 46-39, including a season-high 24 offensive boards which LU converted into a season-best 30 second-chance points.
Anthony Miles and Justin Nabors each collected double-doubles and Reggie Mathis had his best shooting night in six games as a Cardinal. Miles had 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes. Nabors, who missed the final few minutes of the first half after being kicked in the back of the head, collected 16 points and 10 boards - seven offensive. Mathis finished with 16 points and made two 3-pointers in Lamar's 21-14 run over the final seven minutes.
Marshall (3-1) shot 50 percent from the floor and tied a school record with 13 blocked shots. Tyler Wilkerson scored a game-high 18 and had seven blocks.
The Herd used a 14-5 run midway through the first half to get out to a 27-13 lead with 7:55 to play. They led by as many as 20 before taking a 41-25 lead into the locker room.
Lamar shot 38 percent for the game and 64 percent from the free throw line.
Lamar will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 28, when it plays host to North Carolina A&T. Tip-off at the Montagne Center in Beaumont is set for 7:05 p.m.
