LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Lamar basketball team had its lowest shooting night of the young season and committed 21 turnovers in a 77-54 loss to Texas Tech at United Spirit Arena Saturday.
Lamar (2-2) shot just 38 percent and struggled at the free throw line for the second-consecutive games, making just 9-of-22 for a season-low 23 percent. The Cardinals did hold a 43-37 rebounding edge, including a season-high tying 16 offensive boards.
Charlie Harper led the Cardinals with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Justin Nabors grabbed 10 boards to go along with nine points.
Texas Tech (5-0) shot 46 percent and got 19 points off the bench from Nick Okorie, which included two 3-pointers with one at the halftime buzzer that gave the Red Raiders a 36-26 lead going into the locker room.
With Tech leading 33-36 following two D'walyn Roberts free throws, Lamar raced down the court and with Anthony Miles ready for a layup to make it a five-point margin, lost the ball out of bounds with 2.2 seconds left. That's when Okorie dribbled twice on a Cardinal defender before shooting from a step beyond half court as his shot found the bottom of the net for the 10-point edge.
The Raiders opened the second half on a 10-2 run to pull away for a 46-28 lead with 16:10 remaining. The closest the Cardinals could get the rest of the game was after a trey by Harper with 7:17 to play that made it a 60-44 game.
Roberts had 15 points and nine rebounds for Tech, who beat Lamar for the second time in three seasons after the Cardinals won in Beaumont a year ago.
Lamar will now head east to play Ohio (3-0) in Athens, Ohio, on Monday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Eastern time and the game will be broadcast on KLVI 560-AM.
