SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team continued to roll on Saturday as they took down Southland Conference foe UT-San Antonio 6-1 at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Lamar improves to 15-1 on the year and 6-0 in Southland Conference play with their 13th straight win while UTSA falls to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in SLC play.
The Lady Cards opened the match by taking two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Andrea Martinez and Mariaryeni Gutierrez took down Caroline Dedering and Karen Scida 8-3 at No. 1 doubles while Kaltrina Harbuzi and Salina Aranda held on for a 9-8 win over Holly Phillips and Nathalie Wallin at No. 3. The Roadrunners won at No. 2 doubles as Tanya Hasking and Monika Drabkova handed Maria Gutierrez and Manijee Ashrafi an 8-5 loss.
In singles play the Lady Cardinals won five of the six matches in straight sets, led by Mariaryeni Gutierrez who cruised past Wallin for a 6-0 6-1 victory at No. 2. Harbuzi rolled over Drabkova 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, Maria Gutierrez tool down Phillips 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4, Ashrafi defeated Dedering 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 and Aranda was a 6-1, 7-6 winner over Hasking at No. 6. The only loss for LU came at No. 1 where Martinez fell to Scida 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.
The Lady Cards will wrap up their three match road swing on Saturday afternoon when they take on Laredo Junior College at 3 p.m. Their next home match will be played on Saturday, April 5 at 12 p.m. when they host the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions in a showdown between the SLC's top two teams.
