Results

EDINBURG, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team continued their winning streak on Thursday afternoon, taking out the Lady Broncs of the University of Texas-Pan American 4-3 in Edinburg, Texas.

Lamar improves to 14-1 on the year with their 12th straight win while UT Pan American falls to 14-7 on the year.

The Lady Cards opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches, led by the tandem of Andrea Martinez and Mariaryeni Gutierrez who took down Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Maria Gutierrez and Manijee Ashrafi defeated Silke Buksik and Megan Bedeau 8-4 at No. 2 while Salina Aranda and Kaltrina Harbuzi paired up for an 8-5 win over Luisa Cantu and Stephanie Willerding at No. 3.

The doubles point proved to be the difference maker in the match, as the two teams split the singles competitions three to three. The Lady Cardinals won the top three singles duels, while UTPA prevailed at four, five and six.

Martinez ousted Oliveira 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, Mariaryeni Gutierrez cruised past Cirne-Lima 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and Harbuzi collected a 6-3, 6-4 win over Bedeau at No. 3. In the match at No. 4 Willerding came from behind to defeat Maria Gutierrez 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, Buksik rolled past Ashrafi 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Cantu defeated Aranda 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Lady Cards will be back in action again on Saturday at 9 a.m. when they take on Southland Conference foe UTSA in San Antonio, Texas.
