HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team wrapped up their opening weekend of Southland Conference play with a 7-0 win over Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Lady Cardinals improve to 5-1 on the year and 2-0 in Southland Conference play, while Sam Houston drops to 1-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Lady Cards started the match by grabbing the doubles point with wins at two and three double. The duo of Manijee Ashrafi and Maria Gutierrez prevailed at No. 2 with an 8-2 win over Roxana Martinez and Stasa Vujosevic while Salina Aranda and Kaltrina Harbuzi combined for an 8-1 win over Elenora Kuruc and Patricia Manzur at No. 3. In the No. 1 doubles match Sam Houston's pair of Irina Sotnikova and Peta Taylor ousted Andrea Martinez and Mariaryeni Gutierrez 8-4.
In singles play Martinez bounced back from her doubles loss with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sotnikova at No. 1. Mariaryeni Gutierrez also avenged her doubles setback with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kuruc at No. 2, while Harbuzi took down Taylor 6-2, 6-1. In the No. 4 singles match Maria Gutierrez cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Vujosevic, Ashrafi took down Manzur in the No. 5 spot 6-1, 6-3 while Anahita Jagtiani downed Martinez 6-2, 6-2 at No.6.
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action next Friday at 2 p.m. when they host UT-Arlington at the Cardinal Courts.
