BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis continued their solid start to the 2008 season with home victory over Alcorn State last Friday at the Cardinal Courts.
The Lady Cardinals won their first home match of the season while not dropping a singles set. All three of the Lady Cardinals wins this season have been 7-0 wins.
Starting in doubles play the Lady Cardinals picked up a win at No. 1 as Andrea Martinez and Mariaryeni Gutierrez paired up for an 8-0 win over Stefania Guzman and Sarah Jo Peters. At No. 2 doubles Maria Gutierrez and Manijee Ashrafi took down Swetha Devaraj and Katherine Hoepelman 8-3 while Salina Aranda and Anahita Jagtiani blanked Felicia Chien and Avernelle Holder 8-0.
In singles play Martinez cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Devaraj at No. 1, Mariaryeni Gutierrez swept Guzman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Kaltrina Harbuzi posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hoepelman at No. 3. In the match at No. 4 Maria Gutierrez coasted past Claudia Gonzales 6-1, 6-3, Ashrafi was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at no. 5 over Chien and Jagtiani won her match at No. 6 6-3, 6-0 over Peters.
The Lady Cardinals, 3-1 on the year, will be in action again on Friday afternoon in Nacogdoches, Texas when they open Southland Conference play against Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m.
