BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team closed out their home schedule with a 4-3 win over the UTSA Roadrunners Sunday afternoon at the Cardinal Courts.
With the match tied at three all, Kaltrina Harbuzi pulled away from Karen Scida in the third set of a marathon match to seal the win for Lamar. Scida outlasted Harbuzi in a first set tie breaker and won 7-6, but after that, it was all Harbuzi, who took sets two and three 6-0, 6-2.
Pamela Martinez celebrated senior day with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Nathalie Wallin at No. 3, Manijee Ashrafi defeated Tanya Hasking 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 and Maria Gutierrez made quick work of Monika Drabkova, winning 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2.
The Roadrunners collected a win at No. 5 as Holly Phillips held off Manami Kuroda 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, and picked up their other point in singles at No. 6 with the Cardinals defaulting the match due to not having enough players.
The Roadrunners opened the match by taking the doubles point, as Hasking and Scida took down Ashrafi and Martinez 8-4 at No. 1, and received a win at No. 3 as Lamar defaulted. Gutierrez and Harbuzi picked up a win at No. 2 doubles for Lamar, taking out Drabkova and Phillips 8-3.
The win improves the Lady Cardinals record to 12-9 on the year, and 7-3 in Southland Conference play. The final match of the regular season will be played on Tuesday, when the Lamar takes on Stephen F. Austin in Lufkin at 1 p.m.
