Lamar Falls to Houston, 17-10, in 10 Innings

BEAUMONT - Junior Collin DeLome went 3-for-6 with two home runs and five runs batted in, but it was not enough as Houston scored seven runs in the top of the 10th inning for a 17-10 win over Lamar University in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar dropped to 18-11 overall and Houston improved to 15-12. The Cardinals remain at home to host Nicholls State in a three-game series this weekend. The Cardinals and Colonels will play Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Lamar has swept the season series with Nicholls in each of the last two years.

With the game tied at 10-10, the first four batters all singled for Houston in the top of the 10th inning. Zak Presley led off with a single, stole second and scored on Ryan Lormand's single up the middle. Felix Fanaselle singled to right field and Jimmy Cesario followed with an RBI single to right.

Kingsbury sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Josh Stirneman walked to load the bases. Luis Flores and Bryan Pounds both drew bases loaded walks. Presley, batting for the second time in the inning, cleared the bases with a 3-run double to left center field to make the score 17-10.

After falling behind 9-3, the Cardinals rallied for three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 9-9. Ryan Baker had an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Brian Lloyd. DeLome followed with a 2-run home run to right field.

In the sixth inning, Erik Kanaby doubled down the left field line, extending his hitting streak to six games. Baker, who was 3-for-5 with four runs scored, singled and DeLome followed with a towering 3-run home run that cleared the scoreboard in right center field to tie the game, 9-9.

The Cardinals loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning on singles by Baker and Jeff Vickers, and a walk David Moore. Pinch-hitter Michael Ambort drew a bases load walk to drive in Baker with the go-ahead run.

Houston tied the game with a run in the top of the ninth inning. Dustin Kingsbury led off the inning with a single and scored on Bryan Tully's single up the middle to tie the game at 10-10.

Lamar scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to get the scoring started. Kanaby and Baker both walked. DeLome loaded the bases by reaching on a bunt single. Jeff Vickers drove in Kanaby with the game's first run on a sacrifice fly to center field. Baker scored on a wild pitch and Keith Towne drove in DeLome with a single to right field to make the score 3-0.

Houston scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Kingsbury had an RBI single to right field. Stirneman followed with a 2-run double down the right field line and Flores had an RBI single to center field.

The Cougars took advantage of four Lamar errors to plate five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Bryan Tully started the inning with a triple to left center field on a ball DeLome lost in the lights. Pounds followed with an RBI single. Fanaselle drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Stirneman delivered a sacrifice fly to give UH a 9-3 lead.

Scott Meyer (0-1) took the loss in relief for Lamar. He allowed four runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in three innings pitched. Cody Williams started and pitched the first two innings, allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.

Aaron Brown (4-1) pitched the final two innings to pick up the win for the Cougars. He allowed no runs on no hits with one strikeout. Starter Donnie Joseph tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
