Results
BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's tennis team dropped a five-our marathon match to Arkansas State Saturday, falling 4-3 to the Lady Indians at the Cardinals Courts.
The Lady Indians were able to capitalize on Lamar's lack of players in doubles, as they won the doubles point by winning at No. 2, as Maria Oprea and Renee Branker handed LU's Maria Gutierrez and Kaltrina Harbuzi an 8-5 loss. The match at No. 3 was not played and was forfeited to ASU. Lamar did pick up a victory in doubles, as Manijee Ashrafi and Pamela Martinez posted an 8-2 win over Paula Chelminska and My-Hang Nguyen at No. 1
In singles play the Cardinals picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 as Harbuzi blew past Oprea 6-0, 6-1 in the top spot and Gutierrez handled Zeljka Minic 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Manami Kuroda also picked up a win for the Lady Cards, taking down Branker 2-6, 7-6 (13-11), 7-5 at No. 5.
With the point in the six spot being forfeited to the Indians, ASU was able to close out the match by winning at the three and four spots. Rone Van Wyk took down Pamela Martinez 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 3 and Paula Chelminska took out Ashrafi 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again next Saturday when they travel to Hammond, La. to take on the Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m.
