Lamar Loses at Southeastern Louisiana, 73-64

HAMMOND, La. - Junior Lamar Sanders recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds, but Southeastern Louisiana built an early lead and never looked back in beating Lamar University 73-64 Saturday night in Southland Conference men's basketball action at the University Center.

Lamar dropped to 9-13 overall and 3-5 in SLC play. The Cardinals remained tied for third place in the SLC East Division with McNeese State, who lost 61-53 at Nicholls State. SLU improved to 14-8 overall and 6-3 in SLC play, which is good for second place in the East Division.

Sanders scored the game's first point by making one-of-two free throws at 19:49. That was the Cardinals' only lead of the night. The Lions reeled off the next eight points on a Daryl Cohen three-pointer and Joseph Polite capped the rally with a layup, a dunk and a free throw to make the score 8-1.

A layup by Sanders at 14:58 made the score 10-6. SLU responded with a 9-0 run. Kevyn Green started the run with a 3-pointer and Patrick Sullivan capped it with a jumper in the paint to put the Lions up 19-6 with 11:58 left in the opening stanza.

SLU pushed the lead to as much as 16 points, 35-19, on a Green 3-pointer at 1:03. Ray Sansom hit a jumper with two seconds left to make the halftime score 36-23.

The Lions scored the first seven points of the second half to push their lead to 20 points, 43-23, on a pair of Cohen free throws. Polite scored the first basket of the half and Green added a 3-pointer.

Brandon Chappell answered for the Cardinals with a 3-pointer and Lawrence Nwevo added a bucket to trim the lead to 43-28. The Cardinals scored the game's final eight points to make the final score 73-64.

Junior Currye Todd led Lamar with 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Nwevo came off the bench to scored eight points and grab five rebounds.

After blistering the nets at 59.3 percent from the field and 64 percent from 3-point range in Thursday's win over Nicholls State, Lamar couldn't find its shooting touch Saturday. The Cardinals shot 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from 3-point range and 71.4 percent (20-of-28) from the free throw line. Lamar outrebounded SLU 46 to 38.

Green led SLU with 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Cohen added 14 points and Polite and Quennell Green each scored 11 points. Sullivan grabbed a team-high eight rebounds off the bench and Terry Bryant dished out eight assists.

SLU shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from 3-point range and 50 percent (13-of-26) from the free throw line. The Lions forced 16 turnovers which led to 12 points.
