BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's basketball team ran out of time in the upset bid against Southland Conference East division leaders Southeastern Louisiana, falling 72-71 at the Montagne Center.
Leading by one at 69-68 with 1:37 to play, the Lady Cards failed to take advantage of a SELA turnover, quickly turning the ball back over to the Lady Lions who quickly converted with a Tina Wilson layup.
Lamar responded with a pair of free throws by Dionne Pounds, giving them a 71-70 advantage with 18 seconds to play. Southeastern then answered the Lady Cardinals with a pair of free throws by Wilson with 3.7 seconds to play giving the Lady Lions a 72-71 lead.
Lamar had one last chance at the win, but their full court pass attempt was intercepted by Southeastern's Brenita Williams who was able to run out the remaining time to seal the win for the Lady Lions.
Lamar controlled the game for the entire first half, building as much as a six-point lead behind 10 points from Brittney Williams. Southeastern closed to within one point with a minute to play in the first half, but a jumper and a free throw by Jana Mustard game LU a 35-31 lead heading into the break.
For the game the Lady Cardinals were led by Pounds' who scored a game-high 22 points, while Williams scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. LaToya Carson added 13 points for Lamar, while Alexis Timpone added seven points and eight assists.
Southeastern was led by Wilson's 19 points on 5-7 shooting from behind the three point arc, while Williams added 15 points.
The Lady Cardinals won the battle of the board, out rebounding SELA 31 to 26, but the Lady Lions edged Lamar in shooting percentage, knocking down 50 percent of their shots (25-50), while Lamar knocked down 49 percent (24-49). The Lady Cardinals also won the free throw battle, making 18-22 (81.8 percent) while SELA was 14-18 (77.8 percent) from the charity stripe.
Lamar will in action again on Thursday night when they host league leader UT-Arlington at 7:00 in the Montagne Center.
