UT-Arlington Downs Lady Cardinals 65-51

Feb. 8, 2007

BEAUMONT, Texas - Keyed by a 13-6 run to end the first half, the University of Texas-Arlington Lady Mavs handed the Lamar University women's basketball team their third straight loss in Southland Conference play, 65-51 at the Montagne Center.

Leading by six at 22-16 with 7:14 to play, the Lady Mavs found another gear offensively, while the Lady Cardinals were unable to take advantage of their own scoring opportunities. While Arlington poured in 13 points, Lamar could only muster six points, while turning the ball over five times.

The Lady Mavs opened the game on a 13-2 run, but Lamar was able to climb back into the game behind the hot three point shooting of Dionne Pounds. Pounds was three for four from behind the arc in the first half, helping LU close the gap to four points with 8:21 to play.

The second half started the same way the first half did, with UTA building on their lead before the Lady Cards responded. Arlington was able to build their lead to as much as 22 points with 5:20 to play, a deficit LU could not overcome.

The Lady Cardinals picked up their offensive tempo over the final five mites of the game, out scoring the Lady Mavs 14-5. The late run however was not enough to knock off the league-leader, who improve to 15-8 overall and 10-0 in SLC play.

For the game the Lady Cardinals were led by Pounds' 18 points, while LaToya Carson and Brittney Williams added 15 and 13 points respectively.

The Lady Mavs were led by reigning SLC player of the year Terra Wallace, who scored 19 points, while Maryann Abanobi added 16 points.

Lamar won the rebounding battle 31-28, but could not overcome a 37.5 percent shooting night, while UTA knocked down 50 percent of their sots from the field,

The Lady Cards will be in action again on Saturday, when they hit the road for a 4 p.m. showdown with Texas State in San Marcos, Texas.
