TULSA, Okla. - The Lamar University women's tennis team faced three teams ranked in the top 50 over the weekend, dropping all of their matches 4-0 in Tulsa, Okla.
The weekend started with a 4-0 loss at the hands of No. 45 SMU on Friday afternoon, saw Lamar drop a 4-0 decision to No. 49Tulsa on Saturday, and closed out the trip with a 4-0 loss at the hands of No. 50 Wichita State.
In Friday's contest against SMU the Mustangs opened play by winning the doubles point, winning all three matches.
In singles play SMU won at No. 2 s Jennifer Chay defeated Tanya Roberts 6-1, 6-2, Pavi Francis knocked off Pamela Martinez 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and Kristen Reed was victorious over Manami Kuroda at No. 6 6-0, 6-0.
In Saturday's loss to Tulsa, the Lady Cards again dropped the doubles point, as the Golden Hurricanes swept all three matches. In singles play Kaltrina Harbuzi was defeated 7-5, 6-1, by Santie Delport at No. 1, Roberts was knocked off 6-1, 6-0 by Carla Zabaleta in the two spot and Kuroda was taken out 6-2, 6-0 by Eleonora Kuruc at the No. 6 spot. The other three matches went unfinished.
In Sunday's match against Wichita State the Cardinals again failed to secure the doubles point, as the Shockers took all three matches. In singles play Harbuzi was taken out by Madina Rakhim 6-1, 6-0, Roberts fell at No. 3 6-3, 6-3 to Lenore Lazaroiu and Pamela Martinez was dropped 6-1, 6-1 by Anna Egorova in the four spot.
With the three losses, Lamar falls to 4-5 on the season. The Lady Cards will be in action again on Saturday, March 10 when they open Southland Conference play against Northwestern State at the Cardinals Courts at 11 a.m. In addition to being the SLC opener, the match will be the first home contest of the 2007 season for Lamar.
