Lady Cardinals Tennis Picks Up a Pair of Wins

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The Lamar University women's tennis team opened the 2007 season with a pair of wins over the weekend, knocking off Oral Roberts 7-0 on Friday, and taking out UALR 4-2 on Saturday.

 

The Lady Cards, 2-0 on the year, started the weekend with a sweep of the Golden Eagles.

 

Lamar won the doubles point with the tandem Manijee Ashrafi and Pamela Martinez beating Hayden Rush and Paige McKinney 6-3 at No. 2, while Maria Gutierrez and Manami Kuroda won at No. 3 doubles over Rafaela Souza and Korsead 8-1. ORU picked up their only win as Emily Arkel and Tayler Pippen defeated Kaltrina Harbuzi and Tanya Roberts 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.

 

In singles play the Lady Cards swept through ORU in straight sets. Harbuzi defeated Arkel 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1, Robert downed McKinney 6-2, 11-9 at No. 2 and Gutierrez defeated Pippen 6-2, 6-4 at the three spot. At number four singles Martinez was victorious over Rush, 6-1, 6-7, Ashrafi knocked off Souza 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 and Kuroda won 7-6 (7), 6-4 over Corrine Langston at No. 6.

 

In Saturday's win over ULAR, the Cardinals again took two of the three matches in doubles play. Harbuzi and Roberts paired up for an 8-5 win over

 

Harbuzi picked up a 6-0 6-3 win over Jenna Hirdle at No. 1 singles and Martinez knocked out Patricia Cortes lost 6-3, 6-3 to at No. 4. Ashrafi defeated Marta Gomez-Jordana 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, while Gutierrez's match against Laetitia Bourgeon was unfinished at 6-3, 4-6, 5-5 at No. 3.

 

The Trojans two victories came as Outi Jarvinen won 6-0, 6-3 over Roberts at No. 2, while Rosario Negrete won 6-2, 6-4 over Kuroda at No. 6 singles.

 

The Cards opened the match by taking two of three in doubles play to get the doubles point. Harbuzi and Roberts defeated Bourgeon and Hirdle 8-4 at No.1, while Martinez and Ashrafi knocked off Cortes and Negrete 8-5 at No.2. At No. 3, Jarvinen and Robinson won 8-5 over Gutierrez and Kuroda.

 

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Friday at 10 a.m. when they take on North Florida in El Paso, Texas.
