HUNTSVILLE - The Lamar University women's tennis team dropped a key match in Southland Conference play on Saturday, falling to Sam Houston State 4-3 in Huntsville.
The Lady Cardinals got off to a tough start by dropping the doubles point. The Bearkats picked up the point in doubles with Brooke Mills and Peta Taylor defeating Pamela Martinez and Tanya Roberts 8-5 at No. 2 doubles and Cristina Flores and Emma McDougall knocking off Maria Gutierrez Kendall Gibbs 8-5 at No. 3.
Lamar's number one tandem of Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander did collect another win in doubles, breezing to an 8-1 win over Lata Assudani and Irina Sotnikova. The win improved the duos record to 16-1 on the season.
In singles competition Andrea Martinez knocked off Sotnikova 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Pamela Martinez took out McDougall 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 while Gutierrez downed Taylor 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5.
The Bearkats sealed the win by taking wins at two, three and seven. Assundani knocked out Shelander 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 at No. 2, Mills downed Roberts 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 and Flores took out Gibbs 7-6, 6-0 at No. 6.
