Lamar Loses at Texas State, 14-6

SAN MARCOS - Lamar University entered Friday's game as the top home run hitting team in the conference, but it was Texas State who belted four long-balls in claiming a 14-6 win over the Cardinals in Southland Conference baseball action at Bobcat Field.

Lamar dropped to 30-14 overall and 17-5 in SLC play. Texas State improved to 23-23 overall and 15-7 in SLC play. The Cardinals and Bobcats continue the series today at 3 p.m. and close out the three-game set Sunday at 1 p.m.

Texas State took an early 2-0 lead on a Luke Cannon's 2-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Cassidy Dresch drew a lead-off walk and Cannon hit his 12th homer of the season with one out.

Lamar sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the second inning, scoring six times to take a 6-2 lead. C.J. Ebarb led off the inning with a walk. Matt Lambeth singled to left field and Jo Jo Haney drove in Ebarb with a double to right center field.

Erik Kanaby delivered a one-out single to right field to drive in Lambeth. Ryan Baker walked to load the bases. Collin Delome singled to center field to drive in Haney and keep the bases loaded. Dan Hernandez and Will Henderson both drew bases loaded walks to drive in runs. DeLome scored on a wild pitch to put Lamar up 6-2.

The Bobcats started the comeback in the bottom of the third inning on a 2-run home run by Cannon, his second of the game and 13th round tripper of the season.

Texas State plated four runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-6 lead. Pat Crumpton led off the inning with a single to right field. Dawid Bednarek walked and Thomas Field reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Kyle Jones walked to drive in Crumpton.

Derrick Gordon replaced starter Steve Macfarland to face Cannon, but the Bobcat right fielder lined a 2-run double to straight away center field to give Texas State the lead for good. Cody Merrell followed with an RBI ground out to put the Bobcats up 8-6.

Texas State broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning. Field delivered the big blow, a 3-run home run to left field. Cannon doubled down the right field line and scored on Cody Merrell's RBI single to right field to put the Bobcats up 13-6.

Aaron Garza's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning off reliever Tim Erickson closed out the scoring for Texas State. Justin Fiske recorded the final seven outs for the Bobcats with six coming via a strikeout.

Cannon went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Field was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI and Merrell was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Scott Moore (8-3) started and picked up the win for Texas State. He allowed six runs on nine hits with eight walks and five strikeouts in six innings pitched. He threw 137 pitches in the game.

Macfarland (6-3) took the loss for the Cardinals, allowing eight runs on five this with five walks and four strikeouts in three and one-third innings pitched. Gordon tossed three innings of relief, allowing five runs on eight hits with one strikeout.

Kanaby led the way at the plate for Lamar, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. DeLome was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
