BEAUMONT - Louisiana-Monroe scored six runs in the seventh inning to avoid the sweep and claim a 10-5 win over Lamar University Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference baseball action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Lamar dropped to 30-13 overall and 17-4 in SLC play. ULM improved to 12-27 overall and 7-9 in SLC play. The Cardinals step out of conference for a 6:30 p.m. game at Louisiana-Lafayette Tuesday. Lamar posted a 5-4 over the Ragin Cajuns earlier this season in Beaumont.
Trailing 5-2, ULM scored six times in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-5 lead. Bo Bowman started the rally with a one-out single up the middle. Clark LaBorde singled to right center to put runners on the corners. Derrick Gordon came on in relief of starter Allen Harrington and walked Travis Drader to load the bases.
Steve Lawler followed with a 2-run double down the left field line. Scott Meyer replaced Gordon on the mound and intentionally walked Ben Soignier with two outs to re-load the bases. Justin LaBorde walked to drive in Drader. James Bennett delivered a 2-run single to right field. Josh Morrison closed out the rally with an RBI single to center field.
The Indians added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Andy Jones and Soignier both singled to start the inning. Bennett singled to right field to drive in Jones and Soignier scored on a sacrifice fly by Morrison to make the score 10-5.
ULM started the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Jones, who was 3-for-5, singled to up the middle and Soignier, who was 2-for-4, followed with a single up the middle. Justin LaBorde drove in Jones with the game's first run on a single to center field.
Lamar answered with two runs in the home half of the first inning. Kanaby walked and Collin Delome hit a 2-run home run to right field to put the Cardinals up 2-1. It was DeLome's ninth homer of the season.
The Indians tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the second inning. Clark LaBorde was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Drader and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lawler.
The Cardinals matched the Indians with a run in the bottom of the second to reclaim the lead at 3-2. Jo Jo Haney reached on a two-out, two-base throwing error by third baseman Clark LaBorde. Colt Crawford, who was 2-for-4, singled up the middle and Kanaby drove in Haney with a single to left field.
In the bottom of the third inning, Dan Hernandez was hit by a pitch and scored on C.J. Ebarb's two-out, 2-run home run to right field to give Lamar a 5-2 lead. It was Ebarb's seventh homer of the season.
Gordon (3-3) took the loss in relief for the Cardinals. He allowed two runs on one hit with one walk and one strikeout in one-third of an inning pitched. Harrington started and pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
David Mixon (2-6) pitched a complete-game for ULM, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in nine innings pitched. He threw 144 pitches in the game. The Indians' 10 runs were the most scored against Lamar since Louisiana Tech posted a 14-5 win over the Cardinals on March 14.
