BEAUMONT - Senior Matt Lambeth went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in to lead Lamar University to a 12-1 win over Louisiana-Monroe Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference baseball action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Lamar improved to 30-12 overall and 17-3 in SLC play. ULM dropped to 11-27 overall and 6-9 in SLC play. The Cardinals, who run-ruled the Indians for the second straight game, go for the series sweep today at 1 p.m.
Senior William Delage (9-2) tossed his third complete-game of the season, allowing one run on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings. He ran his strikeout total to 252, needing just five more to surpass Kyle Green (1991-94) as the school's all-time leader. Kyle Smith (0-2) started and took the loss for ULM, allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in two innings pitched.
Lamar scored 10 or more runs in a game for the 11th time this season and recorded a double-digit hit total for the 26th time this season. Through two games this weekend, Lamar is outscoring ULM 24 to 3 and is out hitting the Indians 27 to 14.
ULM struck first with a run in the top of the third inning. Andy Jones reached on a fielder's choice and Ben Soignier singled through the left side of the infield. Justin LaBorde, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI, singled to right center field to drive in Jones.
The Cardinals broke the game open with nine runs in the home half of the third inning. Collin Delome hit a 2-run double down the right field line and Dan Hernandez delivered a 2-run single down the left field line. Lambeth hit a 2-run single and Jo Jo Haney closed out the scoring with an RBI in an infield single to put Lamar up 9-1.
Lamar scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Erik Kanaby tripled to right center field and scored on Ryan Bakers sacrifice fly to right field.
The Cardinals plated two runs in the bottom of the seven inning, which ended the game due to the conference's 10-run rule after seven innings of play. Hernandez, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, led off the inning with a single. Ebarb, who was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, double to right field and Hernandez advanced to third. Lambeth's 2-run double to left center field ended the game.
