NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Lamar University women's tennis team punched their ticket to the Southland Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon, knocking off Northwestern State 6-1 to complete a weekend sweep of their final two matches.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals sit at 6-4 in SLC play, which gives them the edge over Texas State who finished the regular season with a 5-5 SLC record.
The Lady Cardinals started the match by taking the doubles point, Tara Shelander and Andrea Martinez remained undefeated in SLC play by defeating Fernanda Silva and Magali Van den Bergh at No.1, 8-0. At No. 3 doubles Kendall Gibbs and Maria Gutierrez dropped Marcia Alcantara and Helen Grimes 8-2 to collect the doubles point.
Tanya Roberts and Pamela Martinez fell at No. 2 doubles, losing to the tandem of Catalina Villegas and Daniela Posada 8-5.
In singles competition Andrea Martinez took out Villegas 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Shelander dropped Silva 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Pamela Martinez took out Alcantara 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4. At No. 5 singles Gutierrez downed Posada 6-1, 6-3, while Kendall Gibbs knocked out Grimes 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Indians picked up their only point as Van den Bergh defeated Roberts 4-6, 5-1, retired, at No. 3 singles.
