BEAUMONT - Junior Ryan Baker went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and senior William Delage pitched eight strong innings to lead Lamar University to an 8-1 win over Sam Houston State Friday night in Southland Conference baseball action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Lamar improved to 26-12 overall and 14-3 in SLC play. SHSU dropped to 20-17 overall and 10-7 in SLC play. The Cardinals and Bearkats, who won Thursday's game 6-2, will play the rubber game of the series today at 1 p.m.
Delage (8-2) allowed one run on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in eight innings pitched. He retired the Bearkats in order in the second and seventh innings. He allowed the first two batters to reach on base hits in the top of the ninth inning before being relieved by Scott Meyer.
After allowing a hit to load the bases with no outs, Meyer got Adam Perry to ground into a 4-6-3 double play, which allowed pinch-runner Nick Zaleski to score. That ended a streak of 18 consecutive innings by Delage, which encompassed his last three outings. He also tied John Senes (1981-84) for third most career games started with 45 and increased his career strikeout total to 245, which trails only Kyle Green's (1991-94) 256.
Lamar jumped out to an early lead with a pair of unearned run in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed in the game. Baker singled to center field and Collin Delome was hit by a pitch, which was the first of three times he would reach via that avenue.
Dan Hernandez grounded out to the pitcher, which put runners on second and third. Will Henderson reached on a throwing error by shortstop Gregory O'Neill, which allowed both Baker and DeLome to score and give the Cardinals a quick 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth inning, Will Henderson doubled to left center field with one out. Matt Lambeth singled sharply up the middle just off the glove of a diving Clint Mann at second base.
In the Fifth, Baker walked with one out, DeLome was hit by a pitch and Hernandez walked to load the bases. C.J. Ebarb drew a four-pitch walk from Jesse Marshall to drive in Baker to make the score 4-0. Lamar added three more in the sixth inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Colt Crawford was hit by a pitch with one out, Erik Kanaby reached on an infield single and Baker walked to load the bases. DeLome drove in Crawford on a hit by pitch. Henderson walked to drive in Kanaby and Ebarb waked to drive in Baker.
The Cardinals added a run in the home half of the eighth inning on Lambeth's RBI fielder's choice to make the score 8-0. Henderson went 2-for-4 with a runs scored and an RBI, and Ebarb and Lambeth each had two RBI.
Marshall (1-2) started and took the loss for SHSU, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with three walks in four and two-third innings pitched.
Sophomore Allen Harrington, who is 1-2 with a 2.79 earned run average, is expected to start today's game for Lamar. Zach Adkisson, who is 3-1 with a 2.11 ERA, is the Bearkats probable starter.
