MONROE, La. - The Lamar University women's tennis team picked up a key victory in Southland Conference play on Friday afternoon, knocking off the Louisiana-Monroe Lady Indians 6-1 at Heard Stadium.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals sit at 5-4 in SLC play. A win on Saturday will give LU the sixth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, while a loss will give Texas State the sixth seed.
The Lady Cardinals started the match with a sweep of doubles play, taking 8-3 wins in all three matches. Tara Shelander and Andrea Martinez remained undefeated in SLC play by defeating Daliny Sithimorada and Diana Espinal at No.1, Tanya Roberts and Pamela Martinez knocked off Noelia Leon and Sharon Makhanya at No.2 while Kendall Gibbs and Maria Gutierrez dropped Pauline Bourdet and Giovanna Arrondo at No. 3.
In singles competition Andrea Martinez took out Espinal 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Shelander dropped Leon 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and Roberts downed Sithimorada 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 at No. 3. At No. 4 singles Pamela Martinez took out Bourdet 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 while Gutierrez downed Arrondo 6-2, 0-6 6-4 at No. 5.
The Lady Indians picked up their only point as Makhanya defeated Gibbs 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
The Lady Cards wrap up regular season play Saturday when they take on Northwestern State in Natchitoches at 2 p.m.
