BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's tennis team collected their first win in Southland Conference play Tuesday afternoon, taking out the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks 5-2 at the Cardinal Courts.
The Lady Cards, (5-3, 1-0) started off by picking up the doubles points with a sweep in which the No. 33 ranked pair of Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander picked up an 8-2 win over Kama Scott and Megan Langston. The Ladyjack duo jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match, but Martinez and Shelander asserted themselves and took the next eight games for the win.
In the other two doubles matches Pamela Martinez and Tanya Roberts won 8-5 over Lauren Nowicki and Laura Harrison, while Kendall Gibbs and Mariantonietta Gutierrez breezed to an 8-1 win over Gabriela Gadeva.
In singles play Andrea Martinez picked up a point with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 over Scott, while Gutierrez blanked Gadeva 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.
After Stephen F. Austin picked up wins at No. 3, with Langston knocking off Roberts 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Mary Harrison taking our Gibbs 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, the match was in the balance with two matches yet to play. Lamar held a 3-2 lead, and the two remaining matches were into the third set.
After dropping the first set, and falling behind in set two, LU's Pamela Martinez bounced back to win a tie breaker which led to an easy 6-1 win in set three to knock out Nowicki 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.
The point collected by the win gave Lamar the match just seconds before Shelander finished off Scott in the third set at No. 2, 7-6, 6-7, 6-1.
The Lady Cardinals, now 5-3 on the season, will be in action again on Saturday afternoon when they take on McNeese State at 1 p.m. at the Cardinal Courts.
