Lamar Slugs its Way Past SFA, 12-2

BEAUMONT -Will Henderson homered twice and drove in five runs, and William Delage turned in a record-setting performance on the mound to lead Lamar University to a 12-2 win over Stephen F. Austin Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference baseball action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar improved to 18-10 overall and 6-2 in SLC play. SFA dropped to 5-21 and 2-9 in SLC play. The Cardinals will go for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.

Delage (5-2), a senior from Nederland, allowed two runs on five hits with a career-high 14 strikeouts and one walk in seven and two-third innings pitched. It marked the second straight game that a Lamar pitcher has a set a career-high for strikeouts as Steve Macfarland fanned 12 in Friday's 10-1 win over the Lumberjacks.

Leading 7-2 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, the Cardinals scored five times to end the game via the SLC's 10-run rule. Colt Crawford, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, led off the inning by reaching on an infield hit. Erik Kanaby followed with a double to right center field.

Collin DeLome hit a 2-run triple down the left field line to plate both Crawford and Kanaby. That was DeLome's third triple of the season and 12th of his career, which makes him the school's all-time leader as he was tied with Joe McCann (1976-79).

Dan Hernandez, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, drove in DeLome with a single to left field. Henderson hit a game-ending 2-run home run to deep left center field to put the Cardinals up 10 runs, 12-2.

Lamar jumped out a quick 4-0 lead after two innings. Kanaby reached on an error by shortstop Jared Schrom and scored on Hernandez' RBI double to left center in the first inning.

In the second, Lambeth led off the inning with a walk and Jo Jo Haney followed with a single through the left side to put runners on the corners. Crawford drove in Lambeth with a single to right field.

After Haney and Crawford moved up a base on a wild pitch by SFA starter Sammy Hardwick, Haney scored on an RBI ground out by Kanaby. Ryan Baker drove in Crawford with a sacrifice fly to right field to put Lamar up 4-0.

The Cardinals extended their lead to 7-0 with three runs in the home half of the seventh inning. DeLome was hit by a pitch and Hernandez singled to center field. Henderson cleared the bases with a 3-run home run to left center field.

In the top of the eighth inning, SFA David Jeans led off the inning with a single to center field. Kevin Croft hit a two out, 2-run home run to left center field to cut Lamar's lead to 7-2.

Henderson, a senior from Beaumont-Kelly HS, went 2-for-5 and drove in a career-high five runs. He leads the team with nine home runs and 33 RBI.

Hardwick (0-3) took the loss for SFA, allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits with one strikeout and three walks in 1 2/3 innings pitched.

Sophomore Allen Harrington, who is 0-2 with a 2.76 earned run average, is expected to start today's game for Lamar. Richard Folmer, who is 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA, is the Lumberjacks probable starter.
