Lamar Falls to Gonzaga in Season-Opener, 7-6

EDINBURG - Lamar tossed three left-handers at Gonzaga, but the Cardinals dropped their season-opening game, 7-6, to the Bulldogs Friday afternoon on the opening day of the Texas-Pan American Baseball Classic at Edinburg Stadium.

Lamar (0-1) will face Northern Colorado, who played UTPA in Friday's late game, today at 3 p.m. Freshman right-hander Brian Needham is expected to make the first start of his career for the Cardinals. Lamar will close out the Classic with a 2 p.m. game Sunday against Oklahoma.

Gonzaga broke a 6-6 tie with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bobby Carlson walked and Ryan Wiegand reached on a fielding error by third baseman Andrew Gay. Shawn Wayt was hit by a pitch from reliever Allen Harrington (0-1) to load the bases with one out. Zach Woodward drove in Carlson with the game-winning run on a two-out single to center field.

Michael Ambort drew a one-out walk in the top of the ninth for the Cardinals. But Collin Delome struck out and pinch-hitter C.J. Ebarb grounded out to second to end the game.

Senior left-hander William Delage got the opening-day start for Lamar, allowing four runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in three and two-third innings pitched. Junior left-hander Derrick Gordon tossed one and two-third innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Harrington, a sophomore left-hander, was the hard-luck loser for the Cardinals. He pitched two and two-third innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts.

Gonzaga (1-1) started the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Tyson Van Winkle had a 2-run double and Brennan followed with an RBI single.

The Cardinals answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Andrew Gay walked, Jo Jo Haney was hit by a pitch and Matt Lambeth walked to load the bases. Michael Ambort drew a walk that forced in Gay with Lamar's first run. Collin Delome drove in Haney with an RBI ground out to make the score 3-2.

The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 4-2 with on an RB I single by Wayt in the home half of the third inning. Lamar tied the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Dan Hernandez singled and Haney drove him in with a two-out single. Lambeth followed with an RBI single that tied the game.

Gonzaga scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-4 lead. Wayt walked and scored on a wild pitch by reliever Derrick Gordon in the fifth. Darin Holcomb walked and scored on an RBI ground out to second by Wiegand.

Lamar rallied again in the seventh inning, scoring a pair of runs to tie the game at 6-6. Haney walked and scored on an RBI single by DeLome. Ryan Baker followed with a single and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop, which also allowed DeLome to score and tie the game.

Hernandez, a junior transfer from Skyline (Calif.) Junior College, went 2-for-4 with a run scored to pace the Cardinals at the plate. Haney went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and DeLome was 1-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.
