Lamar Falls to Oklahoma, 11-4

HOUSTON - Lamar University dropped its second straight game at the Coca-Cola Classic hosted by Rice University at Reckling Park, losing 11-4 to Oklahoma Saturday evening.

Lamar dropped to 4-4 on the season while Oklahoma improved to 6-2. The Cardinals close out the weekend tournament Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. game against host and No. 4-ranked Rice. Derrick Gordon, who is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA, is expected to start for the Cardinals. Bobby Bell is the Owls probable starter.

The Sooners jumped on Lamar starter William Delage (1-1) for four runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back. Joseph Hughe provided a 2-run single through the right side of the infield. Chuckie Caufield had an RBI single to center field and Aaron Reza laid down a bunt single to drive in the fourth run.

Lamar struck for a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ryan Baker singled with two outs, which extended his hitting streak to eight games. Will Henderson followed with a double to right field to drive in Baker.

Oklahoma scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 9-1. The Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 9-4. Jo Jo Haney walked, Colt Crawford was hit by a pitch and Erik Kanaby walked to load the bases, which chased starter Steven Guerra (3-0) from the game. Matt Lambeth, who was 2-for-3, drew a walk off reliever Will Savage to drive in Haney. Collin DeLome followed with a 2-run single to center field, which extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 games.

The Sooners added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the scoring. Hughes led the way at the plate for OU, going 3-for-5 with four RBI. Russell Raley was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Reza was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Guerra allowed four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the Sooners. Delage allowed nine runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Cody Williams pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts.
