BEAUMONT - The Lamar Lady Cardinal tennis team dropped their 2006 home opener Tuesday afternoon, falling 4-3 to the Ragin Cajuns of Louisiana Lafayette at the Cardinal Courts.
The Cajuns and Lady Cardinals played a close match, with the deciding point coming in doubles play. Lafayette's Tammy Day and Chanell Meijer handed Lamar's Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander their first loss of the 2006 season at No.1 doubles 8-5, giving ULL an early upper hand.
At No.2 two doubles the Cajuns wrapped up the doubles point when Clemence Remy and Kimmie Lyles took down the tandem of Pamela Martinez and Tanya Roberts 8-4. The Lady Cardinals did pick up a win in doubles play though, with Kendall Gibbs and Mariantonieta Gutierrez posted an 8-7 (7-2) win at No. 3 doubles over the pair of Thais Bortoletto and Celine VanWeydeveld.
In singles play the Lady Cardinals picked up wins in the No.1 and No.2 spots, when Andrea Martinez won 6-4, 6-2 over Day, and Shelander won 7-6, 6-4 over Remy. The Cardinals other win in singles came from Gutierrez, who rallied for a 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Lyles in the five spot.
The Cajuns wrapped up the win by winning at three four and six. At No.3 Celine VanWeydeveld took down Roberts 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 Meijer downed Pamela Martinez 6-4, 6-2 and in the six spot Bortoletto handed Gibbs a 6-0, 6-1 loss.
The lady Cards will be in action again Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they take on Centenary at the Cardinal Courts.
